The Stories I Was Always Meant to Tell
I never set out to write across more than one genre. But some stories simply refuse to stay quiet, and eventually, you stop fighting them. I'm Julia, an Australian author with Welsh blood running through my veins. I write the kind of stories that have been niggling at me for as long as I can remember.
Where It Began
My great-grandmother Margaret boarded a ship alone in 1898. In a man's world that considered a woman at sea to be bad luck, she carried secrets no one wanted told and a strength no one expected. For years, her story lived only in whispers, fragments of family history that society assumed would stay buried. I couldn't let that happen.
The Welsh Immigrant began as a desire to honour Margaret and the fierce women who came after her. It grew into something much bigger—a deep dive into historical research, family secrets, and the kind of female courage that never makes headlines but changes everything.
Then Came Something Completely Different
While I was living inside Margaret's world, another story was demanding my attention. Black Ponds arrived fully formed and urgent: three women, a deadly secret, and the suffocating hidden world of domestic violence. Dark, and deeply human.
Two completely different genres. Two completely different worlds. But the same thread runs through both: strong characters, secrets, and stories that needed to be told.
And Then There's Trashenator
My talented nephew Alex is an illustrator. He was young and studying when he got his first diagnosis. This stopped his progress and ruined his plans. A project between not just a writer and illustrator, but a deal, a distraction, was born between family. For Alex, and for every person fighting battles the world doesn't always see; Trashenator came to life. Trashenator is my children's adventure for readers aged 7–12. It's a fast-paced story about Sven and the Science Club, a gang of smart, brave kids taking on the villainous Trash Clan to save the world from drowning in rubbish.
It's fun, it's fast, and it carries a message our world genuinely needs right now. And I'm thrilled to share that Trashenator is available now on Amazon: ebook and print!
Why I Write
The honest answer is that I don't choose my stories; I feel like they choose me. Each one arrives with its own urgency, its own characters who refuse to be ignored, and its own reason for existing. What unites them all is a belief that stories matter. The right book at the right moment can change how someone sees the world or how they see themselves.
That's why I write. And that's why I'm so glad you're here.
The Power of Storytelling
Stories have a magical way of connecting us. They bridge gaps between generations, cultures, and experiences. When I write, I aim to create that connection. I want my readers to feel something, whether it’s joy, sorrow, or that gut-wrenching twist that leaves you breathless.
The Importance of Female Voices
In both my thrillers and historical fiction, strong female characters take center stage. These women are not just plot devices; they are complex, flawed, and incredibly real. They reflect the struggles and triumphs that many of us face. Through their journeys, I hope to inspire readers to embrace their own stories.
Embracing the Journey
Writing is not just about the finished product. It’s about the journey, the late nights, the cups of coffee, the moments of doubt, and the bursts of inspiration. Each story is a part of me, a piece of my heart laid bare for the world to see. And let me tell you, it’s both terrifying and exhilarating!
Looking Ahead
If any of this resonates with you, please subscribe and follow the journey. Black Ponds is coming very soon, and The Welsh Immigrant will follow. There is so much more to share. I can’t wait to take you along on this adventure!
